When I add an ng-if conditional in the html, does angular constantly check to see if the condition passes or fail?

if it does or does not, how can I make angular constantly check the conditional method or on the other hand make angular not constantly check ng-if. If I have an async call, how would I make angular recheck the ng-if method after async call is finished?
