Why cant i JSON.parse string inside an object

taking this Object:

var event = {selector: 'title'}
event.selector //'title'
typeof event.selector //string

but

JSON.parse(event.selector)
//VM1487:1 Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token i(…)

If i run it manually JSON.parse('title') it works...

It works as follows: JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(event.selector)) but this seams to me as wrong.

Do you know why this happends?

P.S.: I guess this question was answered already but i can not express the question i guess.
