Allow overflow on x axis while adding scroll for y axis of div

I have a div that I want to add stuff dynamically to. Horizontally it shows up fine but vertically it starts overflowing the content of the page and looks awful. For that I want to add a scroll on the y axis but let the x axis as it is. I managed to do add the scroll like this on my css file

.tab-pane {
    height: 200px;
    overflow-y: auto;
    overflow-x: hidden;
}

This code also prevents the x-axis scroll to show up but it clips the content on the sides which didn't happen before adding the overflow options. How could I prevent that clipping?
