I want to produce a plot showing variation between images using PCA in R. So far I have only found questions on using more complicated image data, like photos/face recognition etc. The intention is to take several hundred scale line drawings produced in photoshop and plot the variation between them to assess which ones are most similar to each other.

The reasoning behind this is a methodological pain-in-the-ass used by archaeologists for ceramic analysis outlined by Hermon et al 2003 (https://publikationen.uni-tuebingen.de/xmlui/handle/10900/60723). example of line drawings

Literally any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated - I am not an engineer or software developer so only have limited knowledge in these areas. Are there R packages that can be used for compressing image files into data that can be plotted using PCA?

    Thanks!
